Biography
Originally from Evansville, Indiana, Dr. Cushman was graduated from Purdue University and
from Indiana University School of Medicine. Following medical school, he
completed a rotating internship at Memorial Hospital of South Bend, Indiana and
then did a general practice locum tenens at Welborn Clinic in his hometown before beginning psychiatric residency training at the University of
Florida Hospital and Clinics in Gainesville in 1967. Immediately upon
completing psychiatric residency training Dr. Cushman went into the U.S. Army
and was assigned as the Division Psychiatrist for the 25,000 troops of the 25th
Infantry Division at Cu Chi, South Vietnam. When the 25th Infantry was pulled
out of RVN a few months later, Major Cushman temporarily took charge of the
Department of Psychiatry at Saigon's Third Field Hospital before becoming the
Division Psychiatrist for the 101st Airborne Division at Camp Eagle (near Hue) where he remained until
his return to the U.S. Following a final year at Ft. Jackson (SC) U.S. Army
Hospital, Dr. Cushman entered private practice in Gainesville with Asa L.
Godbey, Jr., M.D. in July 1972 and has practiced here since.
In addition to membership in the Alachua County Medical
Society and the Florida Medical Association, Dr. Cushman is a member of the
American College of Psychiatrists and a Distinguished Fellow of the American
Psychiatric Association. He served as member of the APA Committee on
Information Systems 1998-2002. He is active in the Florida Psychiatric Society
and the North Central Florida Chapter of the Florida Psychiatric Society. He
has Chaired the FPS Committee on HIV and AIDS and currently Chairs the FPS
Newsletter Editorial Board and Budget Committee. He has served the FPS as
Councilor (1992-94), Treasurer (1994-95), Vice-President (1995-96),
President-elect (1996-97), President (1997-98) and Immediate Past President
(1998-99). Dr. Cushman is Associate Editor of the FPS Newsletter
Transference and Webmaster of the FPS Website
http://www.floridapsych.org. He was named 1999 Private
Practitioner of the Year by FPS. He has served as Secretary-Treasurer, Vice
President and President of the North Central Florida Chapter. Dr. Cushman was
a founding member of the North Central Florida AIDS Network (NCFAN) and was
Editor of the NCFAN Newsletter from 1985-1989. He was named Volunteer of the
Year in 1987 and served on the NCFAN Board of Directors in 1988. He has spoken
on HIV and AIDS, Depression, Anxiety and OCD and has chaired several scientific
programs at the state and national level.
Dr. Cushman participated in the Ciba-Geigy Anafranil
Research Protocols in the late 1980s studying the effectiveness of clomipramine
in the treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. During that time he saw
referrals from all over Florida since only a few centers were able to dispense
the only available treatment drug. He continues to have a special interest in
the psychopharmacological treatment of OCD.
Dr. Cushman is a courtesy Clinical Assistant Professor of
Psychiatry, University of Florida Teaching Hospital and Clinics in Gainesville.
He is also a Staff Psychiatrist at Apalachee Center for Human Services and has
provided psychiatric services to their patients in Madison and Taylor Counties
for some 25 years.
Board Certification
Dr. Cushman is Board Certified in Psychiatry: Diplomate,
American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
